- First contact your township assessor, checking the details of your property.
- File a written appeal with the board of review. All documentation must be submitted with the appeal.
- The appeal is based on the amount of property value, not the amount of taxes you pay.
- The board of review will be fair and objective when reviewing the data you submitted as evidence.
- Provide the board facts about your property and your assessment that support your appeal.
- Your evidence should be convincing and concise as the board has many appeals before them to rule on.
- If you have had a recent independent appraisal completed on your property this is a good evidence document you can submit with your appeal.
- The board will review your appeal and make an informal ruling. You will be sent a notice. If you are not satisfied with the decision you have ten (10) days from the date of your notice to return your request for a formal hearing with the board of review.
- Decisions by the board of review can be appealed to the property tax appeal board. You have thirty (30) days from the board of review final decision to file to the ptab.
